If you've been using Microsoft Outlook for a while and have decided it is your favorite email program, you can designate Outlook as your default email program in Windows 7 and earlier versions of Windows. Just follow a few easy steps, and Outlook will automatically become your default email program. In this short tutorial we will see how to make Outlook for Mac 2011 as the default application for e-mail, contacts and calendar. Click the Outlook menu and select Preferences from the menu list. In the Outlook Preferences window, navigate to General option under the Personal Settings. In Microsoft Outlook 2016 for Mac running on Mac OS X Yosemite (10.10) or later versions, you cannot set Outlook as the default application. In Outlook Preferences, under General, you enable the Make Outlook the default application for e-mail, calendar, and contacts option. Mail is set as the default email program on our Mac, so when we happen to click on an email link in anything (say, our browser), the Mail app automatically opens up and creates an email message. We don’t want that, we’d like to be able to designate our chosen email apps (I use Thunderbird, she uses Entourage).
I understand that you would like to make Outlook.com as your default email. Please be informed there is no way to make your web based email as the default email in sending emails. A mail client is the default email program by web browsers and other programs that support sending and receiving email. You must have a mail client installed on your computer to make your Outlook.com as the default address for sending emails. To change the settings of your deafult email program, refer to the steps below:
For Windows Vista and Windows 7:
- Open Default Programs by clicking the Start button , and then clicking Default Programs.
- Under Programs, click the email program you'd like to use in this case Windows Live Mail, and then click Set this program as default.

- Log on as Administrator
- Open Internet Explorer, click the Tools menu, select Internet Options.
- Click Programs tab and select your email client from the drop-down list.
NOTE: The first time you start them, some email programs display a message asking you if you want to use that program as the default. If you choose to do so, this program will become your default email program , even if you've chosen a different program using Set your default programs earlier.
